San Francisco and Krakow Poland become Sister Cities

Krakow and San Francisco will officially become Sister Cities on Thursday July 2nd in Krakow, Poland.

Sister_clipboardWe are very excited that Krakow and San Francisco will officially become Sister Cities on Thursday July 2nd in Krakow, Poland


Krakow Mayor Jacek Majchrowski will be welcoming San Francisco delegation to Krakow.  The Mayor of San Francisco will be represented by San Francisco City and County Supervisor Bevan Dufty and Protocol Officer Matthew Goudeau.  There will also be several leaders of Polonia organizations present, including the President of the Polish Arts and Culture Foundation Caria Tomczykowska, Director of the Lowiczanie Polish Folk Dance group Mary Kay Stuvland, as well as myself and Tad Taube, Honorary Consuls for Poland in Northern California.  We are also pleased that we will have with us in our delegation noted writer Shana Penn, author of Solidarity’s Secret: The Women Who Defeated Communism In Poland.   In addition, there will be San Francisco delegations from the Taube Foundation, the San Francisco Appreciation Society and the Jewish Community Center attending Krakow at this time and participating in the various activities.  We will have over 100 visitors from San Francisco as part of our delegation for this special event.

Below is some information that may be helpful in planning your trip.

Events, Concerts and Performances During the Sister City Week:

The schedule is subject to change, but at the present time, this is a summary of some events, concerts and performances taking place in Krakow during the Sister City week:

June 27          

6 PM Krakow’s pop singers Agnieszka Grochowicz, Jaga Wronska, and Mariusz "Oziu" Orzechowski perform songs by Poland’s late songwriter Jonasz Kofta in Srodmiejski Osrodek Kultury culture center, 2 Mikolajska street at Maly Rynek square (upstairs)

7 PM  Poland’s jazz pianist Wlodek Pawlik gives recital in Filharmonia Krakowska concert hall, 1 Zwierzyniecka street and Straszewskiego street

8 PM Poland's jazz pianist Ryszard Swiech plays in Cieplarnia club, 15 Bracka street, (free admission). 

8:30 PM  Krakow Opera Company produces Rossini's 'Barber of Seville' in the courtyard of the Wawel Royal Castle

9:30 PM  Jazz concert features Poland’s A.M. Special Quartet in Harris Piano Jazz Bar, 28 Rynek Glowny (Grand Square),

June 28
7 PM   Krakow's Nazzar trio performs music inspired by traditional Jewish tunes in Galicia Museum, 18 Dajwor street

7 PM   Ukraine's trio, Ineynem, performs klezmer music in Hotel Rubinstein, 12 Szeroka street

 8 PM   Concert of Jewish music features the USA’s cantors Moshe Schulhoff and Yaakov Lemmer, Morocco’s Emil Zrihan, and the USA’s Bezion Miller and Daniel Gildar in Synagoga Tempel synagogue, 24 Miodowa street

8 PM   Open-air concert features Poland's accomplished pop rock duo, Anita Lipnicka and John Porter, on Plac Sw. Ducha square 

8:30 PM  University of Agriculture Choir and Orfeusz chamber orchestra perform ‘St. Paul’s Road’ miracle musical in Kosciol Sw. Sw. Piotra i Pawla church, 56 Grodzka street. 

9 PM    Poland's band, Boogie Boys performs boogie woogie and blues in Lizard King club, 11a Sw. Tomasza street. 

9:30 PM Jazz concert features Poland’s Brightside Quartet in Harris Piano Jazz Bar, 28 Rynek Glowny (Grand Square).


June 29          

6 PM Krakow’s Cracoviana Folk Group performs traditional tunes of Poland’s various regions in Scena Pod Ratuszem cellar playhouse, the Town Hall Tower on Rynek Glowny central square

6:30 PM Czech Republic’s Slezské divadlo Opava produces Giacomo Puccini’s operas, Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica, in Opera House, 48 Lubicz street,

8 PM   Morocco’s cantor Emil Zrihan and his ensemble perform Spanish Jewish music in Synagoga Tempel synagogue, 24 Miodowa street

Evening, Jewish Festival, Kazimierz: Concert of Jewish music features clarinetist Michael Winograd playing traditional klezmer tunes. 

9:30 PM Latin jazz jam takes place in Harris Piano Jazz Bar, 28 Rynek Glowny (Grand Square) (free admission). 

June 30          

7 PM   Krakow's pianist Anna Boczar plays Chopin's music in Dom Polonii, 14 Rynek Glowny central square

8 PM   Krakow’s Kroke ensemble performs jazzy music inspired by traditional Jewish tunes in Synagoga Tempel synagogue, 24 Miodowa street

9:30 PM  Jazz concert features Poland’s quartet, Aspirin Free in Harris Piano Jazz Bar, 28 Rynek Glowny (Grand Square)

July 1

6:30 PM Slovakia’s Statne Divadlo Kosice produces Giacomo Puccini’s ‘Madama Butterfly’ in Opera House, 48 Lubicz street,

7 PM. Tempel Synagogue, ul. Miodowa 24 Honorary Consul Tad Taube and Festival director Janusz Makuch will present the Irena Sendlerowa Award to Jan Jagielski, chief archivist of the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute. http://www.jewishinstitute.org.pl/en/home/instytut/0.html

Followed by a CONCERT at the Tempel Synagogue: Israel’s Ha-Ben Ish Hai Esemble performs music inspired by Sufi tunes. New York’s band, Pharaohs Daughter, performs jazzy music inspired by traditional Sephardi tunes. 

 

July 2

9:00 PM: Tempel Synagogue: USA’s Bzenzion Miller, Eliyahu Oizer Miller, Chaim Shimon Miller, Chaim Mandelbaum, and Isaak M. Cziment perform traditional Hassid music. 
New York’s band, The Sway Machinery, performs jazzy music inspired by blues and traditional Jewish tunes.

MIDNIGHTThursday Night Dance Party, Drukarnia Club, ul. Podgórska 1.

 

July 3

Concert of opera arias takes place in the courtyard of the Wawel Royal Castle at 8:30 p.m.

 

July 4  

11:30 AM Sabbath Kiddush, Popper Synagogue, ul Szeroka

1 PM   Taube Foundation’s One-hour tours of Kazimierz, free of charge. Meet in front of Popper Synagogue on ul Szeroka.

6PM—1AM Kazimierz: Closing Night Festival Concerts outdoors on Szeroka Square. Free and open to all.

8:30 pm   Concert of opera and Chopin's music takes place in the courtyard of the Wawel Royal Castle


July 5

5 PM   U.S. Consulate and Festival co-host American Independence Day Concert with the Cantors Assembly of the USA.

July 5-31         14th Summer Jazz Festival takes place in Krakow from July 5th to July 31st.
